María and Moisés are native Otomí entrepreneurs who pride themselves on preserving their indigenous language, known as Hñahñu Del Valle del Mezquital. They promote the cultural richness of their community by working with agave fiber (ixtle) and grew up observing and learning the artisanal work performed by their parents and grandparents. María and Moisés are intimately familiar with each step involved in the production of agave fiber products, and their vast knowledge allows them to continue innovating personal care products made from ixtle.

Marcelino Martínez López

Marcelino Martínez López learned to spin agave fiber at the age of 8 to contribute to his family’s economy. He is very proud of his roots and his culture. At 65 years young, he still continues the tradition of spinning agave fibers and enjoys passing down his knowledge to the new generations.

Lucio Martínez López

Meet Lucio Martínez López, a seasoned artisan deeply immersed in the timeless art of agave cultivation and fiber extraction. At 67 years young, Lucio’s passion for his craft shines through as he meticulously carves agave leaves, preserving ancestral techniques passed down through generations. Committed to sharing his wisdom, Lucio collaborates with local educational institutions, ensuring the legacy of agave craftsmanship remains alive and thriving within his community.

Reina Francisco

Meet Reina Francisco, a master of el Telar de Cintura (backstrap weaving), whose journey began as a child, observing her mother’s intricate techniques. Today, Reina honors her family’s legacy by innovating the traditional Ayate into a modern personal hygiene product. With dedication and love, she crafts each piece uniquely, embodying patience, hard work, and perseverance. As a devoted mother of four, Reina’s passion for her craft shines through, enriching both her family and the Paloma Negra community.

Ignacia López

Meet Ignacia López, a skilled artisan weaving wonders with ixtle, spun meticulously by her own hands. With expertise in various weaving techniques using hooks and wooden needles, Ignacia seamlessly blends her craft with daily tasks like shepherding. Juventino Portugal Salas

Juventino Portugal Salas is a Mexican entrepreneur who works tirelessly in his multifaceted agricultural business, where the nopal (cactus) and its tuna (prickly pear) are harvested. He is committed to responsible and sustainable agricultural practices that minimize the use of natural resources in his community. In addition to fostering a prosperous and equitable local economy, Juventino promotes the conservation of the soil, efficient use of water resources, and protection of biodiversity on his nopal farms.
